Room Humidifier Care: Humidifier Filter Life
Do you have a room humidifier? One of the most important things to get to know about it is its filter. Just how it works is simple. When a room humidifier draws air in, it traps dust in its filter and expels only pure air back into the room. Naturally if the filter is allowed to get dirty, it won’t be able to do its job well. The humidifier would end up spewing the dust back into the room along with mold spores and other germs brought by the water vapor. Furthermore, a dirty filter forces the humidifier to work harder than usual.
Estimating the Life of a Room Humidifier Filter
A humidifier filter has a limited lifespan just like any filter. How long it is good for depends on how often you use it. But to be safe, you should never use a filter in excess of what’s indicated in the owner’s manual.
Now how do you know the lifespan of a filter? Typically, a room humidifier manufacturer will recommend that you change filters every 1-3 months. This may vary from one model to another. But as said already, it’s a good rule to stick to this. Sometimes when you use your room humidifier a lot, you should change it sooner.
Factors That Affect the Lifespan of a Room Humidifier Filter
There are various elements in your house that can greatly affect the filter’s condition. Chief of these is the type of water you use for your room humidifier. If the water has a lot of mineral content, this can quickly and easily clog up the filter. There isn’t much you can do about this, as it would be impractical to use drinking water or bottled water to humidify your home.
Also, dust, cigarette smoke and animal dander can all get inside a filter. So make sure you clean the room where your humidifier is at. This is especially necessary if you have furry friends running about or a family member who habitually smokes in the area. Keep your room clean always. It’s not enough to sweep the floors. If you want to be sure, use a vacuum cleaner to suck out all dust and dirt from all corners of the room.
Cleaning and Changing a Room Humidifier Filter
If you are able to keep the area clean, you can get away with changing the filter only once every 3 months. Also, wick filters can be washed clean. It’s better to just buy a new filter though, as they are inexpensive as well as difficult to clean. Moreover when you’re ready to set aside your room humidifier after a long period of use, do a major cleaning of the whole appliance, including the filter. Dry it off well before putting it in storage. This will help extend the life of your humidifier.
