Air Purifiers Information and Buying Guide

Posted on December 9th, 2008 in Guides by Humidifier Guide

Air purifiers are a household appliance used to remove dust particles, allergens and other impurities from the air. It is a room-specific device; that is to say, its operation takes place in a single enclosed area, such as a bedroom or living room.

No matter who you are buying the air purifiers for, or for what, you should always be very careful when picking one. For many people, it is the cost of the air purifiers that is the real concern. However the price of the unit is not the only issue. You also have to consider durability an d usability. Just because it is expensive does not mean it is sturdy and reliable. On the other hand, if you settle for too low a price or a “sale,” you could be dealt an air purifier with inferior parts.

There is one very important factor that you must consider. And this is – the filter. The filter is really the key area on which the usefulness of an air purifier hinges. And yet many people overlook it because they can not see it.

To begin with, what is the filter for? Well, simply put, air purifiers can’t purify the air in your room without it. As the device sucks in the air from the room, it forces that air to pass through the filter. The filter then catches whatever foreign particles may be in the air, such as animal dander, pollen, tobacco smoke, etc.

A filter like this needs to be replaced on a regular basis. If not, the unit won’t be able to puriy the air effectively.

Now, not all kinds of air purifiers have a disposable filter. Instead, some have a reusable dust bin or receptacle that you just need to empty and clean out every day or week. This type of filter-less air purifiers is much more convenient for most people. You don’t have to spend a lot of time cleaning them. And it is also economical since you won’t have to keep on buying new filters.

If, for any reason, you prefer to buy an air purifier with a disposable filter, then you need to familiarize yourself with the different filters in the market. This can be very confusing. But most of the time, you can be safe assured using a HEPA filter. HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. It does the job well when it comes to getting rid of common allergens like pollen, smoke, dander and other light particles (except gases, micro-organisms and very fine substances).

HEPA filters meet all the standards of the Department of Energy. The downside to using them is they are more expensive than other brands. You can find other filters that are comparable to them. But try to get as much information as you can first. Nothing is more important than the air we breathe. Talk with your air purifiers salesperson or manufacturer to find the best brand for you.
