How Does a General Humidifier Work

Posted on November 20th, 2007 in Guides by Humidifier Guide

General humidifiers increase the moisture in the room’s atmosphere by releasing mist. Moisture is important to prevent dryness of the nasal passages, and even of the furniture and other house components especially during winter.

The most common type of general humidifiers is the evaporative humidifier that is based on the principle of evaporating and dispelling mist into the air. A general humidifier has several parts. It has a wick, a water reservoir or water tank and a fan.

In a general humidifier, the wick also functions as a filter that facilitates that transport of water from the reservoir. The wick permits the evaporation of water from the general humidifier. Most general humidifiers can regulate themselves. This is because the evaporation of water also depends on the humidity of the environment. When the environment is more humid, the evaporation of mist from the general humidifier is slower compared to when the environment is dry. In every general humidifier, the wick has to be cleaned and replaced from time to time.

The water tank is the storage of the water to be evaporated by the wick. The water reservoir varies in capacity from one general humidifier to another. It has to be refilled when the water level reaches the minimum and has to be cleaned once in a while.

The fan of a general humidifier is located close to the wick. It blows air into the wick in order to release the moisture into the room.

In some cases, general humidifiers are connected to the air conditioning or heating systems of the house. The principle remains the same. A filter is placed near the air outlet of the heater or the air conditioning unit. As the air is blown, it is released with moisture coming from the filter of the general humidifier.

General humidifiers have several types. The most common type of general humidifier is the vaporizer. It is also known as the steam humidifier. Water is heated before the mist is released in this type of general humidifier. This is best to use during winter so that your general humidifier works in adjunct with your heating system. Steam humidifiers consume more electricity though, compared with other general humidifiers.

Medicated inhalants may also be added to general humidifiers to make the environment more relaxing especially for people with colds and clogged noses.

General humidifiers work based on a simple principle. But even if it is simple, the advantages are many.
