How Safe Are Cool Mist Humidifiers?

Posted on December 4th, 2008 in Information by Humidifier Guide

There are different kinds of humidifiers. Each of them has its own method of increasing water vapor levels. A vaporizer humidifier, for instance, boils water and blows the steam into the room. An ultrasonic humidifier uses vibrations to break up water drops and then disperses them. A humidifier that uses a fan blows air over water.

Cool mist humidifiers work by spraying tiny water droplets into the air. This sounds simple enough, and quite safe if you use it exactly as indicated in the owner’s manual. However you need to make sure you do clean your cool mist humidifier regularly and thoroughly. Failure to do so could be a health risk, especially for people with breathing problems and allergies.

The danger with cool mist humidifiers is that the water is not boiled prior to dispersion into the air. This is generally harmless if one cleans the appliance regularly according to the product manual. But if the water is not replaced or disposed of properly after each use, it can be a real health hazard.

Water that is not changed or removed can cause problems since bacteria thrive in still water. Further since the water is never boiled, what germs are there from the start are not killed. When the humidifier sprays the water all around, the germs spread. Every time the cool mist humidifier is turned on, more and more spores of bacteria are released into the room.

Another point of concern is the type of water that is used. No matter where the water was taken from, a cool mist humidifier does not “filter” it out well during use. Some particles and minerals in the water deposit make their way into the air. If unclean or plain tap water is used, the amount of such particles may be considerable. Needless to say, more bacteria and particles in the air are not good for people with lung disease or allergies.

How do you avoid this potential hazard?

First, clean your cool mist humidifier according to the instructions for your brand and model type. Do this once a week at least if you use your humidifier often.

Second, always empty out the water receptacle after use. Do not leave the water “sitting” in it as this breeds germs.

Third, keep the cool mist humidifier empty and dry when it is not in use. Fill with water only when you are going to use it.

Fourth, use distilled water, not tap water.

Humidifiers are handy appliances that make life easier. Use it and care for it well to avoid causing or aggravating health problems in your home.
