Getting High with Smoke
A lot of people enjoy the benefits of smoking starting at a very young age. They light a cigarette and inhale the smoke to enjoy the euphoria it provides. Yet, there are some people who would rather enjoy the medicinal benefits without the harmful chemicals by using a vaporizer.
An herbal vaporizer is an apparatus that is employed to release the medicinal benefits of a plant, typically tobacco or cannabis. It is used for therapeutic benefits especially in anesthesia and nasal decongestion. It functions like a heating device where it vaporizes the component with the use of heat either through convection or conduction. The process of conduction involves direct contact of the plant with the heat source, sometimes causing the plant to be burned. In the process of convection, the component does not directly touch the source of it. The heat from the source, either a lighter or a heating pad, generates hot air that passes through the component, thereby releasing the active ingredients of from the plant. This form of herbal vaporizer is effective since it produces more active ingredients than the use of conduction.
In some cultures, an herbal vaporizer is passed around in a group as part of an initiation to welcome the newcomer or to show respect to an elder. Most herbal vaporizers during the ancient times use cannabis or opium for therapeutic purposes which unfortunately, are not still accepted today for medicinal use. For the most part, vaporizers are being used today to administer anesthesia to patients during surgery and for daily use, to relieve nasal congestion and sinus pressure.
Whether it’s through convection or conduction an herbal vaporizer is utilized, both processes provide the same purpose of producing the active ingredients from the plant component to provide therapeutic benefits while regulating the dosage. There are a number of vaporizers available in the market, ranging from the simple nasal decongestant to a calibrated vaporizer for surgery use, to ensure the right amount of dosage at all times. There are varieties that can cost a few hundred dollars due to its complex set up with temperature control.
Clinical studies have been run to examine the credibility of using vaporizers in administering regulated doses of cannabis and tobacco. These studies aim to educate the users on the advantages of using vaporizers to eliminate second hand smoking and to allow the use of cannabis in medical procedures. Smoking is an ongoing problem now that the ages of the smokers have become younger almost every single year. With the education of vaporizer usage, it hopes to gradually diminish second hand smoking and drug addiction.
